This book can be broadly categorised as murder/mystery with a touch of romance and is very much entertainment, not literature. Set in the English Midlands, the plot involves the investigation of a series of rather bizarre serial killings and centres around Katherine Platte, a consultant psychologist retained to profile the murderer.
But there is a second, underlying story, adding a rather unusual twist that hopefully will leave the reader with something to ponder.

“Bad Blood is the first by Pat Whitaker. Usually with the first publication of a new writer you wonder if it is worth picking up and reading, well this one is well worth picking up... more

“BAD BLOOD is one of author Pat Whitaker’s first efforts in the fiction realm. It is an outstanding mystery story in that it artfully weaves diverse characters and sub-plots into a cohesive whole that delivers an altogether entertaining reading experience ... more

“Mr. Whitaker has created an enjoyable murder mystery wrapped up in a cocoon of vampirism. His characters are well-developed and likeable, especially the main female character, Katherine Platte, the consultant psychologist. I enjoyed her easy-going, humourous relationship with the personable and intelligent police inspector ... more

Mr. Whitaker’s novel reads like a bicycle on a gentle downhill run… quick and easy. The fast pace gives the classic English crime genre a fresh, modern, no nonsense edge. I look forward to more of his work.
An easy to read and intriguing story with many twists and turns leading to an unexpected ending. I’m looking forward to the next one which might be even more interesting with the same leading characters. (actually, different leading but same supporting characters. PHW)
A great first book. A well conceived murder mystery which kept me intrigued to the end. I was impressed with your theory regarding **** . Food for thought.
It was a very good read and I look forward to your next effort. Well done.
(**** deleted, as it reveals a key element of the plot. PHW)
A very good read. Took a couple of chapters to get the writing style, but thoroughly enjoyed the sense of immediacy created. Especially enjoyed the treatment that made a generally taboo topic not only plausible but almost probable.
Most enjoyable, heartily recommend it.
This novel has taken the “who-dunnit” murder mystery to a new dimension by suggesting a motive just as gripping as the actual hunt for the culprit. The publication of “Bad Blood” has given us the “why-dunnit” providing, in this instance , a profoundly unpredictable, unsettling yet disturbingly credible outcome. First novels often disappoint, but not this one. It is a thoroughly good yarn well worth reading. Pat Whitaker is an author we can expect to hear more of.
